What is botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin, or Botox®, is a substance that relaxes the muscles. It has been used for many years in medicine. The uniqueness of this injectable is that it tackles the direct causes of many wrinkles, namely the activity of the muscles. When botulinum toxin is injected into the muscle, the nerve impulse that causes the contraction becomes temporarily blocked. This makes botulinum toxin for the treatment of wrinkles in the facial expression, more effective than wrinkle fillers, and it prevents the formation of new wrinkles. Wrinkles are softened or disappear completely. The effect of botulinum toxin is not permanent. Treatment can be repeated without any problems. This injectable is considered completely safe.

Treatment with botulinum toxin

The treatment is substantially painless. With a thin needle, the doctor injects botulinum toxin into the muscle that causes the wrinkle or unwanted facial expression. The injection gives only a slight burning sensation. Immediately after the treatment the skin is a little red and swollen. This disappears after about an hour.

The results of botulinum toxin

The results of the treatment can already be seen after three to six days. The skin is visibly relaxed and the wrinkles are less deep. After fourteen days, the effect is optimal. The effect of a botulinum toxin treatment lasts three to four months. When the treatment is repeated often it has a more prolonged effect on wrinkles; this ranges from six to nine months.
